I went to see Hole at the Electric Factory in Phili last night...I checked to
see if anyone else wrote reviews yet, but I guess not....I'm probably the
first one up and functioning this morning! But I wanted to tell you about
the show.
Courtney, Oh my gosh, she just rocked. The show was being taped by HBO so
she was really hamming it up, but also was VERY gracious and kind to us.
First thing was that she is SO beautiful....a total star....her body is
incredible, long and lean and muscular but soft, and her skin is totally
luminscent...she reminded me of a taller, thinner Marilyn Monroe, to be
honest.
Ok, the music: AWESOME!! They played everything I wouldn't wanted, except
"I Think that I Would Die," which I didn't really expect them to play, just
kinda hoped, because it's my favorite song. But they did do "She Walks on
Me" (in the encore), which totally rocked. Before it, Courtney said "You
guys, I have written one guitar lead in my life and you're about to hear it!"
Actually, I thought the encore was the best part of the show. They started
it with "Northern Star," which I thougth was the best song of the entire
show. Courtney was totally open, vulnerable, moving, meaningful....just
really touching. Then "She Walks on Me," then "Celebrity Skin."
During the regular set, they did just about every song you'd expect, except
no "Drag," which I personally would've rather heard than "Use Once and
Destroy," which I think is their crappiest song. But maybe that' s just me.
They did a new song that I don't know the name of, but it was great.
Melissa seemed really nice and cool. Courtney said "Melissa is on this thing
where she hasn't had any sex, alcohol, or caffeine in four months! Can you
believe it? I've never gone four months without any of those things! Have
you? Raise your hands if so." She got down into the audience a lot, but
that seemed a little risky to me because people kept grabbing her and at one
point she seemed scared, and at another pissed off, because someone tried to
grab the microphone from her hand while she was singing. (I don't blame her!)
Oh, and she kept making references to how the media says she didn't write her
own songs. She said stuff like "You know, Cameron Diaz wrote this next song.
I swear. But then, someone came along and said that Matt Dillon wrote it.
That's such a fucking lie! I was there when Cameron Diaz wrote it. So
remember when you hear it that Cameron Diaz wrote it," or, another time, "Jim
Carrey wrote this next song, not me."
They started the show with "Violet," which was great. And Courtney was
wearing this beautiful long, tight, pink skirt, with a pink bikini top/bra
and some beige knit shrug over it; about half way through she pulled off the
shrug and performed the rest of the show in the bikini top and skirt. Then,
for the encore, she came out in a gold, glittery boustier (sp) type thing
from like Victorian times, with cute little rose colored shorts. She said
"This makes me look like a dork, but that's alright, I am a dork. Plus, you
gotta take fashion risks!" But she looked adorable. I still was marveling
at what a gorgeous body she has now.
Eric was, like, non-existence. I kept forgetting he was even there. He
didn't say two words the whole time. Samantha seemed really nice and cool.
Courtney said "THIS IS THE BEST DRUMMER IN THE WORLD AND I WANT YOU TO ALL
CHEER REALLY LOUD BECAUSE THE BEST DRUMMER IN THE WORLD HAS OVARIES!"
And at the end, Courntey just gave over her pale blue guitar to someone in
the audience. She said "I want you to have this" and handed it over. It was
amazing. I couldn't help but wonder if part of it had to do with the fact
that it was being taped by HBO, though. And then she threw white lillies out
into the audience. I wanted one of those more than anything, but I was too
far back.
I guess that's it. Sorry this is so long! I'm sure I left lots out but
other people can fill in their impressions. Overall, it just made me idolize
Courtney even more. Oh, and she seemed totally sober and straight, which was
great to see.

Hole Show at the Electric Factory: May 15, 1999
All I can say is I was in no way dissappointed. It was amazing. Just
purely amazing.
I got to the electric at around 6:30, and there was about 100 people there,
give or take. There were some really nice people in line, everyone was
great. We got in and they made us sit down in the front so no one would
pusha and crap early. That was really smart since when we did get to stand
up, everyone was pushing and shoving and shit the entire time! it was so
crazy, I rushed the stage when we stood up, and was in the second row for
the entire time imperial teen was on, and they sucked sooooooo bad! they
were just horrible. ugh. Anyway then we waited like an hour for hole to come
on, and it was agony but cool at the same time because evryone was so nice,
and you had to be since you could barely move and it was hard to breathe
there were so many people there. Hands everywhere, people were like touching
my ass and elbowing me and some guys hand was like resting on my breast till
i finally had to nicely ask him to stop. well anyway, hole came on as usual
to the credit in the straight world chant, and launched into violet.
Everyone was so excited and packed in so tightly, a whole sectionm of people
fell onto the floor. That happened 3 times i think, i was in it one time.
Then without saying anything the sang "awful," and let me say that song
sounds soooo good live! Next she talked and was playing on how everyone said
she looked like cameron diaz in her new haircut and she said (actruallu she
said this for 2 or 3 songs) So cameron Diaz wrote this song. im fuckin
serious! then she sang POTI. Now after the first three i do not remember
the order of songs, so here they are in no particular order:
Hit So Hard
Throughout the night she played two songs that were either covers or new, i
dont remember. Then in the middle of the show, Melissa launched into "Get
Ready" by The Greaseband. It sounded sooo good! i loved it! before she
started she said "Hey courtney, if i could just steal the show and jam for a
minute." it was cool, she talked a lot as well. Then Hole left the stage
for about 15 minutes which seemed like forever. At this point i had shifted
and was now in like the 10th row, but it was still really close! I was in
the 3-4 row for most of hole's p0art, which was beyond awesome. So Hole
comes back out and courtney is wearing this sequined garter-bustier type
thing with pink board-short style hot pants and pink fishnets. it looked
kinda cute, and she said, Well everyones gotta take fashion risks. She and
Eric did the acoustic Northern Star, which sounded good, and then She talked
for a bit, and then she said I only wrote one guitar solo in my life and you
guys are gonna hear it. Then she played She Walks Over Me, and it got
everyone really excited. At one point someone threw her a t-shirt and she
was about to put it on but then threw it away. Oh and also to do with
Manson, there was fog on the stage because HBO was taping the concert live
and it got Courtney really mad, she said, whats with the fog?? I dont wanna
be on tour with Marylin Manson, no special effects, turn off the damn fog!!!
that was soo cool, everyone started screaming really loud. Well the show
finally came to a close, and trhey ended with Celebrity Skin, and it sounded
extremely good, it was wonderful!
Overall, Courtney used about a million guitars, gave away tulle from her
skirt, guitar picks, her shorts, a shirt, and a rose and several white
lillies at the end. And she gave her guitar away to a girl hwo had a big
painting thin of Clove, i didn't see it in great deatil, but at the end
Courtney said, I don't want your painting but you can have my guitar! it was
really sweet. So thats it. The (w)Hole deal. I bought 2 shirts and the last
sticker, the shirts are great. It was the best time ever.
