Just got back from seeing Hole in Santa Barbara. The last night of the U.S.
leg of the tour. This is the second time I've seen Hole on a "last night" (the
first being the L.A. forum show of the M/M tour) and there is no doubt that the
band, especially Courtney likes to treat finales as something special.
Courtney was dressed in a red tube top thingy and matching sequined ballerina
short shorts. It was an image that was both sexy and silly(in a good way).
Melissa was sporting a viking helmet. They came to have fun. And unlike M/M
shows everyone wanted to see Hole. The Santa Barbara Bowl is an intimate open
air venue. Just the right size for the kind of show Hole does. Overall the
sound was very good. Courtney's voice was right on. How she move's from howls
to soft singing is amazing. Melissa is the perfect onstage companion. Eric
ever the solid foundation of the band. Samantha, who I feel does not get
enough credit for her drumming, kept the songs strong. And on a visual note,
Samantha is something to watch as she pounds away as her hair blows around.
Fury unleashed. Unfortunately the setlist, though very solid and played with
enthusiasm and loved by the audience, was a bit "safe". Violet, Awful, Pretty
On The Inside, Heaven Tonight, Miss World, Malibu, Reasons To Be Beautiful,
Dying, Playing Your Song, Doll Parts, Boys On The Radio, Northern Star, She
Walks On Me, Cum On Feel The Noize (one verse and chorus), Celebrity Skin.
What really made this show was Courtney's interaction with the audience. She
went into the crowd more, many sections deep into the crowd.. She teased and
chastised the "rich, credit card carrying, never worked for minimum wage kids
of Santa Barbara". Then with a sly smile she'd say "but I still like you."
Things really went nuts when she started pulling people onstage until it was
full of fans. Courtney said she wanted to see if "rich kids from Santa Barbara
could riot." Though tense because of the idea of all those bodies it never
felt dangerous. It was a party. And like a teacher/mother she would tell them
to sit and behave themselves. And as best as they could the group did as they
were told. She danced with them, let them strum her guitar, hold her mic. It
was surreal. To see such faith and trust between artist and fan, just blew me
away. Hole has what it takes.

Before I continue with the review of Hole's show last night, which by the way,
rocked, I would like to send out a big "FUCK YOU!" to all the security at the
Santa Barbara bowl, you people take your jobs too fucking seriously. The fact
that you'd stoop so low as to throw a girl not much taller than 5 feet off of
the stage with such brutality as was demonstrated last night after Courtney had
told the fans to go on stage shows what neanderthals you all are. Ok, got the
rant out of the way, on to the review.
Queens of the Stone Age opened, some people seemed to like it, I didn't too
much care for it, the vocals were way too low and we couldn't hear shit, but
they were ok. I don't really know what category their music falls into, anyone
wanna help me out on that one?????
On to Hole, they came on at around 8:30 and kicked off their set with the
opening to Old Age/Violet, Courtney was absolutely gorgeous, I love the new
haircut, she was wearing these weird little red sequined short shorts (my
friend said it looked like a glam diaper) and a red fishnets with a velvet tank
top thingy that kept slipping down. Sam was wearing a pink shirt and white
masquerade mask, at first I mistook that for a bandage, prolly shoulda worn my
glasses. Melissa looked awesome, she was wearing tight black pants and that
beige corset that she wore on the MTV hole/manson special.Eric was wearing a
tight fitting light blue top with little black stripes on the arms and grey
pants. Oh yeah, and Melissa was wearing a viking hat, it was really cool, I
think she took it off and gave it to a fan halfway thru the show.
Courtney kept bitching throughout the show about how Santa Barbara was a rich
kid town and how white upper-middle class people make her really cynical. About
halfway through the show she starts pulling girls up on stage and once a few
are up there she tells the audience that we should teach the rich kids a lesson
and that anyone who can make it onstage can stay there. Needless to say I
rushed the damn thing and soared over the barricade, I almost got onstage but
the damn security guards pushed me back, this is the part that really pissed me
off though, some tiny girl had nearly gotten up there and one of the security
guards literally picked her up and threw her off into the crowd, jerk offs,
fuck with someone your own size!!!!!
Anyway, in the end somewhere around 100 girls got onstage, it seemed like there
was very little room for the band to move up there. Courtney had a girl play
her guitar for her and I think she got to keep it, the another girl held her
microphone, quite a few girls danced with her. She kept getting pissed because
no one would sit down, during doll parts she made fun of all the rich kids
changing lyrics and stuff while yelling "SIT" between verses. They ended up
with celebrity skin and Courtney gave her guitar to some girl with blue hair, I
think the first girl that got onstage on her own without being pulled up there.
Overall it was a great show, the band looked great, Courtney's voice sounded
great and she was putting out a lot of charisma. Courtney, if you're reading
this, you have to come back to Southern CA, maybe L.A. so some of us don't
have to drive so far :-) and this time, have all the security people be girls,
they won't beat up on people so much.

Oh my god! I have never been to a show like this in my life! it was
incredible!!!!!! OK, where shall I start? I don't remember the set list. They
played like 5 old songs (POTI, doll parts, violet, she walks over me). Umm.
They played Dear Prudence by the beatles. Courtney was wearing a red halter
top with red sequin hot pants (really short shorts), and there was a tutu on
the back of it. her hair had jewels in it. Sam wore black pants and a red
shirt (I think it was red) she also wore a tiara that someone threw on
stage). Umm. Eric wore black pants and a meshy shirt. Mel wore black pants
and i think a black shirt with gold stuff on it. She wore a Vikings hat (i
bought one the next day in Solvang). OK, heres the good part. Courtney walked
to the side of the stage and i ran down like 10 stairs and bit a security
guard so i could get to her. She was yelling shit like "I'm gonna show you
all how to riot!!!" anyway... I had my hands on her for 2 minutes straight. 2
fucking minutes! i touched her stomach (which was as hard as a rock), i
touched her arms, and i touched her breasts (not in a sick way). I screamed
"I love you!" and she looked at me right in the eyes (her face was about 7
inches from mine) and she smiled and giggled. She touched my cheek. I was
going hysterical. I couldn't hear anything, i don't remember any people being
there, it was just me and her. So she started getting scared cuz million
people were grabbing her clothes and stuff, so she ran back to the stage. I
turned around and screamed so loud. I ran back to my seats and watched 3 more
songs. then Courtney started bringing people on stage. At first there were
like 10 trendy ass girls up there, trying to dance to malibu. then Courtney
said "GET UP HETRE IF YOU CAN!!!" and I looked at my friend Jon, and we both
took off. I ran into 3 guards, he ran into a few, but he got thru. guard
pushed me and i screamed "Fuck You!!!" and punched her. (I am never violent
like this... i still cant believe i punched and bit 2 guards.) But I didn't
get in the pit, he did. Jon enjoyed it very much. Umm... they didn't do an
encore cuz there were like 80 people on stage, so they sang northern star,
and Mel started singing rock in roll high school. They sang this one song, it
was familiar, but i couldn't remember what it was from. So then Hole tried to
get off stage. It took em about 5 minutes to get off. Then everyone started
leaving. We waited right by the exit for the bus to pull out so we could
follow em to Phoenix. We saw this Beamer peel out, and we tried to follow it
(clove was in it) but they were going like 90 mph on a city street.... we
were going 80. hehe. OH ya! before i forget! Courtney totally fell during
Dying. She slipped and landed on her stomach. That's what happened that last
time we saw Hole (in Anaheim, CA)..and it was the same song too. umm. Oh ya,
Courtney talked a lot of shit on the kids from Santa Barbara. She was saying
stuff about their parents being rich. Jon and i were screaming and cheering
when she was saying this, cuz its true. We are from Orange County, ca...the
shittiest place in all of cali. But she kind of contradicted herself, cuz she
had a trust fund when she was growing up. I dunno, it was still cool, cuz I
am dirt poor. i cant think of anything else. If i remember any good details,
I'll post em.
